WAN Conservancy Looking Forward Here's a look at projects we are proud to undertake. We invite you to join us. | ||
More and More Projects Continue to Evolve.
The Western Alliance for Nature is currently working on several projects and receives requests daily to support numerous conservation efforts. For example, we are creating a unique, first-of-its-kind management plan in consort with a number of Native American tribes to acquire and preserve submerged off shore Native American archeological and cultural resource sites. The early coastal indigenous people had villages and settlements which are now submerged as the level of the ocean rose in time. They are now subject to vandalism and scavenging by treasure hunting divers.
In Ventura County, the Western Alliance for Nature is supporting wetland acquisitions at Ormond Beach and has established a management program coordinated with the Department of Fish & Game and the Cities of Oxnard and Port Hueneme to protect the breeding areas of both endangered species of Western Snowy Plovers and California Least Terns. The Alliance installed fencing around the nesting areas and has hired a program coordinator to make certain volunteers are present to offer educational information and protect the breeding areas from unlawful intrusion. Progress in reviving the populations of these endangered species each year by this program will be reported on our website so check in for updates. We have already been rewarded by the discovery of a Snowy Plover nest nearby on Hollywood Beach where they have not been sighted for many years.
